Opera Targets PDAs with Browser Technology

Opera Software has unveiled Medium-Screen Rendering (MSR), its technology for bringing Web content to devices that range from PDAs used in "landscape mode" to low-resolution TV screens.

Most Web pages are designed with PCs in mind. Typically, the screen width on a PC is assumed to have a resolution of at least 800 pixels. Smaller devices with smaller resolutions or screen sizes therefore cannot render most Web pages as designed without introducing horizontal scrolling.

Like Small-Screen Rendering (SSR), Opera's solution for mobile phones and smartphones, MSR readjusts Web pages to fit on other screen sizes without introducing horizontal scrolling or zooming. MSR identifies the Web page's content and adapts these different elements individually to fit on medium-sized screens. Original fonts, colors, design and style are left virtually untouched.

According to the company, MSR has met with enthusiasm from the industry, and has already been delivered to several vendors. Products that include MSR should be announced in the near future.
