PowerByHand, the number two retailer of mobile content to Handango, changed its moniker to Motricity this week. A name with more pizzazz that the company asserted reflects its unified solution for mobile content delivery and vision of empowering any mobile user to transform their device into a highly personalized extension of their life.

Motricity’s Chairmon & CEO Ryan Wuerch said, "We are excited about launching our new corporate name, which we believe more accurately reflects our vision and leadership position within the global mobile industry. This gives us a new and exciting brand to leverage as the company continues to increase revenue, expand market share and drive success for our customers.”

PowerByHand has grown rapidly over the last few years through a number of acquisitions and mergers. For instance, it owns PalmGear, the number-one Palm software site, as well as Windows Mobile sites Smartphone.net and Pocketgear.net. The company said its market includes over 2 billion mobile subscribers.

To support upcoming endeavors, Motricity recently received $27 million in venture funding led by Silicon Valley-based Technology Crossover Ventures. Existing investors also participated in this round, including New Enterprise Associates , Intel Capital, Massey Burch Capital, Noro-Moseley Partners and Wakefield Group.

"TCV has been actively analyzing the mobile content market for several years and has concluded that Motricity is ideally positioned to become the global leader in mobile content distribution solutions," said Will Griffith, General Partner at Technology Crossover Ventures.

He went on to say that "TCV only seeks to invest in companies that have the potential to define an industry, and we believe Motricity’s market-leading technology, outstanding proven management team and strong customer relationships are setting the foundation for them to be an industry powerhouse.”
