NetFront Browser Supports New XScale Processors

ACCESS announced this week that the newest version of its embedded browser, NetFront v3.1, supports Intel's next-generation PXA270 processor family, uveiled on Monday. MontaVista Japan, which recently teamed with ACCESS to provide a Linux-based development platform and embedded browser solution, also supports the Intel PXA270 processor family.

The new Intel processors, formerly code-named Bulverde, are designed for mobile devices that require multimedia, low power consumption or security. It enables high processing power for 3D games and advanced video with improved battery power with Intel wireless MMX technology, reducing power consumption with Intel SpeedStep technology and supporting 4 mega-pixel digital cameras with Intel Quick Capture technology.

NetFront v3.1 provides a multimedia extension module, NetFront SMIL Player, that supports multimedia content with integrated text, images, movies and animation. NetFront v3.1 also supports NetFront SVGA viewer, which supports SVGA content that can be optimized to various screen sizes and enlarged and shrunk in the same display. It also supports Real Networks' Helix DNA Client and Adobe's Adobe Reader for NetFront.

According to ACCESS, NetFront recently surpassed 115 million deployments. In addition to Windows Mobile, NetFront supports the Palm, Symbian, Linux, and BREW platforms. It is currently deployed in over 275 devices, ranging from mobile phones and PDAs to digital televisions, gaming consoles, and automobile telematics systems from 90 Internet device manufacturers.
