By James Alan Miller Lawyers love their BlackBerries. More than any other wireless device—save the mobile phone—the most commonly deployed handheld in the legal community. One way law firms integrate Research In Motion BlackBerry smartphones into their practices is to use Onset Technology's METAmessage for Wireless, of which version 4.2 is now available. 150 law firms (40 plus in the U.S. AmLaw 100) use METAmessage. Version 4.2 includes full support for anticipated Carpe Diem version upgrades. Carpe Diem is a time-tracking system for businesses—from a company called Time Tracking and Analytics Businesses—that bills multiple external customers in a day, such as law firms and finance companies. "We are proud to continue partnering with Onset to offer Carpe Diem on the BlackBerry," said Krista Endsley, GM, Time Tracking and Analytics Businesses. "Because of the great functionality included in BlackBerry and Carpe Diem, mobile legal professionals trust these products to keep them in contact with their offices, making these leading brands within the legal industry." With 4.2, Onset also pulled spell-checking off the server and onto the handheld—increasing performance—and added new voice features to let you check your BlackBerry to see voicemail messages. So you no longer need to call in and navigate a voicemail system to find out if there are new voice messages. Here's how it works: When you access METAmessage on a BlackBerry, it now displays new voice messages on its screen. Upon request, METAmessage calls and plays back new messages via any convenient phone: cell phone, hotel phone, pay phone, or the handheld itself.
