Second-hand handsets frequently end up in the local dump. Not a particularly environmental or practical way to make use of discarded mobile phones.

A mini-industry has sprung up in the last few years to employ these devices in a more charitable and commercial manner. ReCellular, through its Wireless Foundation program and partnerships with corporations in the wireless industry, is a company that specializes in this endeavor.

ReCellular’s collection, reuse, and recycling goals include funding charities, protecting the environment, and, of course, earning revenue for itself and its associates: Motorola, Verizon Wireless, Sprint, T-Mobile, Best Buy, the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation, Bell Mobility, and others.

It collects handsets from more than 40,000 drop-off locations across the United States and Canada, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and Antigua.

Chuck Newman, ReCellular president, says "Our focus on servicing the largest companies in the wireless industry has propelled us to this market-leading position. That focus will allow us to prevent tens of millions of phones from entering our landfills for years to come."

The company recently marked two significant milestones with the collection of its 10 millionth phone and the donation of more than $15 million to charity.

Newman notes, "ReCellular is extremely proud to have made this contribution to worthy charities and to our environment."
