Verizon Wireless is the first mobile operator in the United States to offer Research In Motion's latest handheld, the BlackBerry 7250. The carrier giant also recently introduced UTStarcom Personal Communications (formerly Audiovox) CDM8940, a 3G handset that supports the company's new EV-DO network and V CAST consumer service.

EV-DO data travels over a cellular network at typical speeds of 300 to 500 kilobits per second. It can theoretically hit data transmission rates of 2.4 megabits per second.

The 7250 includes a built-in phone, Bluetooth for use with a head set or car kit, and a QWERTY thumb keyboard like most previous BlackBerry handhelds. RIM says it added a brighter 240 x 160 pixel resolution color screen and more memory (32MB of flash memory and 4MB of SRAM )to the mix.

Of course, you get RIM's famous s Personal Information Management (PIM) and push-based e-mail synchronization, and HTML Web browsing. E-mail attachment viewing includes support for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, WordPerfect, ASCII, JPG, BMP, GIF, PNG and TIFF files.

RIM's specifications say the 7250's removable/rechargeable lithium battery powers the handheld for 3.3 hours talk and 8 days of standby time. It measures 4.5 x 2.9 x 0.9 inches (11.3 x 7.45 x 2.2 cm) and weighs 4.9 ounces (139 grams).

For corporate customers, BlackBerry Enterprise Server software integrates with Microsoft Exchange or IBM Lotus Domino and works with existing enterprise systems to enable access to e-mail and other corporate data. Individuals can leverage the BlackBerry Internet Service for an Internet-based e-mail interface that lets users access multiple existing corporate and personal e-mail accounts.

The BlackBerry 7250 sells for $350 with a 2-year customer agreement.

CDM8940
The CDM8940 handset is currently the only EV-DO phone to integrate a built-in 1.3-megapixel camera/camcorder (with built-in flash). It offers memory expansion up to 512 MB through a mini-SD slot.

Other features include a 2-inch, 262K-color main screen and an outer 1.2-inch display at the same color depth. The dual-band/EV-DO handset (800/1900 MHz CDMA) is equipped with the MSM6500 chipset with GPSOne capability (E911 Phase2 Supported). It also offers two-way MMS/SMS, a built-in speakerphone, voice-activated dialing and vibrating alert.

The mobile phone’s dimensions are 3.4 x 1.8 x 1.0 inches and it weighs 3.9 ounces. Its standard rechargeable lithium ion battery should last for 220 minutes of talk time or up to 190 hours of standby time.

Verizon sells the CDM8940 for $230 after a $70 rebate with a two-year agreement.
