Verizon Wireless Syncs Workers

Angling for enterprise customers, Verizon Wireless this week introduced a new service to keep workers up to date on important projects.

Wireless Sync, produced with data-sharing software specialist Intellisync provides groupware-based e-mail, calendars, contacts and tasks, the company said.

The software is installed on a standard PC to monitor e-mail in Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Domino, then pushes the information to a user's mobile device.

It works off the Wireless Sync Enterprise Server, a platform that can support thousands of users and includes security features, such as the ability to disable lost or stolen devices.

Wireless Sync software and servers are designed to support the latest mobile devices, including the palmOne Treo 650 Smartphone and the upcoming Samsung i730, Verizon Wireless said.

The Bedminster, N.J.-based company also announced new pricing for enterprise wireless data plans. Unlimited use of NationalAccess is now $59.99 per month. The service delivers average speeds of 60 kbps to 80 kbps and bursts up to 144 kbps.

The carrier's BroadbandAccess offering, which provides average speeds of 400 kbps to 700 kbps, and bursts up to 2 Mbps, is now $79.99 per month. The service runs on the company's Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) network.

Verizon Wireless is a joint venture between Baby Bell Verizon Communications and U.K. telecom giant Vodafone. The company is the second-largest mobile carrier in the United States behind Cingular Wireless.

Besides Cingular, Verizon Wireless competes with others for business customers. For example, Nextel on Friday added Wi-Fi HotSpot service through partners Boingo Wireless and Wayport.
