Notable new features of the latest version of PhatWare Corporation's Pocket PC handwriting recognition software includes support for Windows Mobile 5.0, a new soft input panel called Write Pad and a Statistical Analyzer. The software analyzes pen strokes written in any application window or in the designated Write Pad area, then converts those pen strokes into text and sends the recognized text to the target application.
It employs fuzzy logic and neural net techniques to recognize arbitrary alphanumeric strings as well as words contained in its integrated dictionary. Owners of previous versions can upgrade to CalliGrapher 8.0 for $24.95. Otherwise it sells for $39.95.

RepliGo Professional for BlackBerry
Cerience Corporation's RepliGo Professional for BlackBerry ($29.95) helps users view business documents on their handheld. The company asserts documents look like their desktop counterpart with original fonts, graphics and tables intact, enabling confident access to information, improved collaboration, communication and productivity.
RepliGo Professional also streamlines document viewing over wireless by adding intelligence to documents at
the server, compressing them for wireless delivery and accelerating them for true document viewing on mobile devices. It supports the most popular file formats, including Adobe PDF, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel, zip, and fax and image files such as BMP, GIF, PNG, JPG and TIF.
IntelligentFind 3.2
General Microsystems update to its search application for Palm handhelds and smartphones promises many bug fixes plus improved speed of searching built-in applications on the more recent Palms (such as the Treo 650). It also adds "auto refresh" of search sets when applications are added or deleted from a device. This new feature can be disabled in the preferences screen and is turned on by default.
The upgrade is free to current users of IntelligentFind. It sells for $14.95.
BackupBuddy for Mac OS X
Blue Nomad's BackupBuddy for Mac OS X, version 2 contains all the features of its Windows counterpart, and works both with the MissingSync from Markspace as well as with the regular Palm Desktop. Additionally, since BackupBuddy is licensed on a per device basis, you can backup your handheld on both a Windows computer and a Mac without any additional cost.
BackupBuddy 2.0 ($39.95,) is a ground-up rewrite of the original BackupBuddy, with many new features. Unlike all previous editions of BackupBuddy, 2.0 is a paid upgrade. Nonetheless, minor upgrades & bug fixes (e.g. 2.X), will continue to be free. Current users do get a 50 percent discount on the latest edition, however.
Spot for Blackberry
Spot is a new GPS ($29) tool for the Blackberry 7520. The Skylab Mobilesystems program shows your position on Street Level Maps, Satellite Photos or other maps from a subscription-free Web Map Services.
The software features Moving Map Navigation, Waypoint / POI (Point of Interest) Management, Routing to Waypoints and much more. Due to interoperable industry standard interfaces, "Spot" can be integrated in a company GIS environment to be used for Field Navigation.

ActiveECG for Treo 650
Active Corporation, a producer of portable medical devices, has released a product bundle called ActiveECG ($699) for Palm, Inc.'s Treo 650 smartphone. ActiveECG is a mobile professional cardiac monitor that can be used with Palm-based handhelds. The new bundle includes the ActiveECG cardiac monitor and accessories, plus a Treo 650 compatible serial cable produced by PN Technologies.
ActiveECG—first introduced in 2001 for Palm handhelds—provides real-time display of ECG data and recording of ECG "strips" on a Palm OS handheld. ECG strips can be stored, reviewed and printed on any compatible PC, or transmitted to other computers or handhelds.
The Battle for Orion's Belt
Cellufun, a provider of real-time multi-player games that can be played on existing, older, and next-generation mobile phones, has released a beta version of The Battle for Orion's Belt. The company says the new mobile space adventure game allows up to eight players to simultaneously battle in real-time in the dense asteroid fields of Orion's Belt. Players can destroy their enemies, dock at their starbase for repairs and provisions, and play in various death match and team-play modes. They can also customize their ships and take on specialized roles to provide that critical edge for their team in the heat of battle.
