According to the company, Opera Mini, now on version 2.0, offers faster and better page rendering while saving on memory and data usage. It does this by compressing Web pages by up to 80 percent and reformatting them through a server component. This should mean faster browsing and lower bills for those who pay for data by the kilobyte.
Opera first made the free wireless browser for cell phones available in January. 7 million users have downloaded Opera Mini and over 1 billion pages have been viewed with the browser since that time. "Opera Mini is a no-frills, instant gateway to the World Wide Web on today's basic line of mobile phones," said Opera Chief Commercial Officer Rolf Assev in a statement. Regarding Opera Mini's step up to smartphones, Assev added, "But we see folks in the industry who are thrilled to use it on higher-end devices. People who are accustomed to mobile browsing in addition to e-mailing or texting, enjoy the speed and reliability Opera Mini offers on today's professional handsets. The fact is, it's a choice available to everyone, novice or pro." Verizon Wireless doesn't yet support Opera Mini, and you must download and install Java 2 Micro Edition for it to work on the Treo.
