FCC Confirms N75 For Cingular, Possible Music Service Compatibility

Nokia's N75 smartphone has been okayed for U.S. release by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). And, as expected, the Cingular Wireless logo is plastered right on the front of the flip phone.

In addition to the usual array of internal and external photos and additional paraphernalia, the FCC Web site includes two draft user manuals for the upcoming compact smartphone. From what the manuals say, it appears the N75 may be compatible with Cingular's just announced new music service, which supports downloads and purchases from a number of different music stores.

These stores include online establishements from Napster and Yahoo music and their flat-fee all-you-can-eat subscription services, as well as eMusic. The cost of individual songs is 99 cents, far less than other carrier music offerings. But unlike Sprint and Verizon you can't download music over the air, only through the PC, so there's no immediate gratification if you buy a song from your phone.

A Napster To Go account is $15 a month, while a Yahoo! Music subscription is $12. Both allow you to download and install as much music as you like, as long as you keep your account up to date. Napster Mobile enables users to listen to 30 second previews of songs from your mobile handset.

As for e-music, those who purchase the Sony Ericsson W810i or W300i Walkman phones get 50 free tracks. A 60 day Napster trial is also bundled.

Cingular will also deliver 25 XM Radio channels for $9 per month, music videos, a MusicID service that automatically identifies a song playing in the background through audio-recognition technology, and a lot of additional music related services. With MusicID, when a song is recognized, users can go directly to Napster to purchase the track for loading onto the handset later. Should the track match a ringtone, you can buy and download that too.

The new Cingular SYNC by Samsung is compatible with Cingular Music, in addition to the Cingular 3125 and the aforementioned Sony Ericsson phones. It appears the full service should go live on November 6th.

The N75, which is reportedly supposed to ship this November, should be the carrier's second high profile Symbian operating system (OS), S60 interface handset in only a couple months - after another Nokia smartphone, the E62

Nokia's N75 is its smallest Nseries model yet - at 3.7 x 2.0 x 0.8 inches (95 x 52 x 20 millimeters) and 4.4 ounces (124 grams). While the N75 is narrow, Nokia still has a way to go before reaching Motorola RAZR thinness of 14 millimeters.

On the outside of the N75 is a small reflective 160 x 128 pixel resolution display and media controls for a music application. Inside, the 3G-enabled quad-band GPRS/EDGE/HTMS/HSDPA phone sports a 2.4-inch 240 x 320 pixel resolution (QVGA) screen that is capable of displaying 16 million different colors.

Unlike the E62, which is messaging focused with its QWERTY thumb-keyboard, the N75, as an Nseries model, is all about multimedia. There's a 2 megapixel camera, micoSD slot, 40 MB of memory, FM radio, and Bluetooth 2.0 with support for wireless stereo headsets. It can handle a variety of audio file formats and record and playback video at 15 frames per second and a 352 x 288 resolution.

Nokia has so far sold over 10 million of its high-end Nseries devices this year alone. It aims to ship 80 million music phones in total before the close of 2006.
