Nokia Launches Music Recommendation Service

Are you a passionate music fan always on the lookout for something new? If so, Nokia has just launched a Web site called Music Recommenders you may want to check out.

Introduced in September as part of its announcement of a group of new Nseries smartphones, all with an emphasis on music, the combo recommendation/audio download destination aims to keep music lovers in touch with the latest songs and artists from around the world.

What differentiates Music Recommenders from other services is that tracks are selected by real experts, Nokia says. The Finnish phone maker is working with people who run 40 leading independent music stores (i.e. Fat Beats in New York, Jazz Record Mart in Chicago, Aquarius in Kingston, Jamaica, Modern Sound in Rio de Janeiro, Pure Groove in London, Hard Wax in Berlin and Mona Records in Tokyo ) from all over the globe.

Each of the 'experts' come up with download suggestions in their area of expertise, across a number of different genres - such as hip hop, indie rock, jazz, Asian pop etc. - each month.

As a bonus, David Bowie contributes his own recommendations as well as features and podcasts.

Users can browse, search and listen to 30-second samples of each recommended song. And, if they choose to, purchase them; but only in the U.K. and Australia at first. Commerce support will follow in additional markets at an unspecified later date.

In addition to browsing the site, you can tag your favorite genres and have recommendations e-mailed monthly.

As the world's largest mobile phone vendor, Nokia sells more cameras today than anyone else. It would like to see the same thing happen with audio players. Music Recommenders is one part of a wider strategy to achieve this goal.

It is the first fruits of Nokia's $60 million acquisition of music distributor Loudeye, which powers the soon-to-be-defunct MSN music store, as well as MTV's and 60 other audio services.

In addition to Music Recommenders, Nokia plans to launch a full-fledged comprehensive music service built on the Loudeye platform sometime next year.
