8703E Battery Issues
My company just switched from Cingular (Blackberry 8700) to Alltel (Blackberry 8703E). So far I am not impressed. The device itself seems ok. The problem is that in this CDMA network this Blackberry is constantly receiving or trying to receive information. It is working almost constantly, I can watch the receive arrow on my screen as it remains on most of the time. This I presume is the reason that my battery barely gets me through a ten hour day. We have several of these units within my company and they all behave the same way. Alltel technical support walked me through a roaming version update. It seemed to help a little. Tech support also said that EVDO information in my area may be causing excessive Blackberry activity and the battery drain, however they offered no solution other than to say that it was a problem that they were learning about and documenting. The Alltel service in my area seems so much worse than what Alltel says. The Alltel coverage map would lead one to believe that they had a better coverage than Cinguular. Overall, I guess it is not the fault of the device alone, but the Alltel service as well. I have been used to Cingular GSM and the "EDGE" reception which was very good in my area. I hope this gets better because right now I am sorry that we made this change, in many ways it has rendered my Blackberry useless, and who wants to carry a phone this big.
