By James Alan Miller
The television network has released a series of NBC Sports branded games for mobile handsets; the latest of which is devoted to alpine skiing’s controversial reigning No. 1 and free spirit Bode Miller.
Developed by Abandon Mobile, Bode Miller Alpine Racing and another game, NBC Sports Figure Skating, are available now for more than 110 mobile handsets to subscribers on the Cingular Wireless, Sprint PCS and Verizon Wireless networks. A third title, NBC Sports Speed Skating, is also listed on the Abandon Mobile Web site.
According to Abandon Mobile, Bode Miller Alpine Racing incorporates the World Cup Champion's likeness as well as his advice and input on gameplay; including pacing, rhythm and controls. In the game, would-be racers try to master the challenging slalom, Super-G and downhill courses.
Text message "NBC" to the number 32852 to receive instructions on how to download the games, which the network plans to promote during its Olympic broadcasts. Future NBC Sports games will include Heads-Up Poker and Real Golf. The NBC Sports mobile games are part of NBC's overarching strategy to promote its 418 hours of coverage of the Olympics through every conceivable media delivery mechanism available. There are snippets of video on Google, news alerts, and fine-tuned Olympic online television listings for the desktop, for example. For the hand, Bob Costas is hosting a daily podcast, there’s a handset-friendly version of NBCOlympics.com, MobiTV is streaming video highlights, and carriers are offering subscribers various Olympic-themed ringtones.
