By James Alan Miller
October 5, 2007

Epocrates plans to release a version of Epocrates Rx, its clinical drug and formulary information guide for healthcare professionals, for the BlackBerry platform this November, the company announced yesterday.

The application combines formulary information specific to a patient's health insurance coverage with clinical drug data about dosing, adverse events, cautions and drug interactions.

It is currently only available for Palm OS and Windows Mobile PDAs and smartphones. Epocrates Web site says BlackBerry users will "enjoy the convenience of over-the-air installation and wireless drug updates."

Currently, the standard version of Epocrates Rx is free. It includes data (e.g. dosing, interactions, adverse reactions, safety/monitoring & pharmacology) about more than 3,300 brand and generic drugs; in addition to a drug to drug interaction checker and health insurance and Medicare Part D formularies.

A professional version of Epocrates RX adds a IV compatibility checker, infectious disease treatment guide, and data about more than 400 alternative medicines. A one-year subscription goes for $60, two years will set you back $99.

Both versions of Epocrates Rx offer continual free updates and medical news.
