Tip: Smartphone - Quick & Easy Backups

Now that you're toting your PDA or Smartphone everywhere you go, you're probably adding information to it when you're far from your desk. Just as you are in the habit (you are, right?) of backing up your computer regularly, you'll want to be sure to do the same with your handheld. Here are two styles of backing up and reasons why each might be right for you.

Sync With Your Desktop Or Laptop
If you sync with your computer on a regular basis, and your computer backs up at least as frequently, then you should be all set. Be sure to perform the sync operation with your handheld just before your scheduled computer backup to ensure you get the most recent data from your handheld into the back up.

If the data on your handheld gets lost, or you had to replace the device, you could sync with your computer to restore your information on the mobile. If you're connecting your handheld with your computer every day-or just about-then this option is probably ample protection (especially if you use a desktop, as it's not likely to get lost).

The Third-Party Backup Solution
Most devices have a slot for either a compact flash (CF), secure digital (SD), miniSD or similar data storage card. Using a third-party back-up solution, you can regularly backup your handheld data onto the card.

If your device is not associated with a computer, you might even maintain one card for regular backups that doesn't reside with your device (so you have it in the event of loss or theft). A software package may offer you other options, such as backing up to a remote location.

Examples include Sprite Backup, which offers backup to either a PC or an FTP server, or Sunnysoft Backup Manager, a Windows Mobile-certified option that has received some accolades.

Depending on your specific device, you may find other software options that are better suited to your needs. One way or another, though, a backup plan helps insure you against the intolerable prospect of an information blackout when your handheld goes haywire (or A.W.O.L.).
