By James Alan Miller
Mark/Space today rolled out the BlackBerry edition of its Mac-to-handheld synchronization software, following a month-long preview edition. The Missing Sync, also available for Palm OS and Windows Mobile devices, is known for delivering a level of compatibility between handhelds and Macs not delivered by mobile device and desktop platforms or the device vendors themselves.
"After being made available in pre-release form for early end-user testing, The Missing Sync for BlackBerry was downloaded and evaluated by thousands of individuals," according to Mark/Space president and CEO Brian Hall. "The feedback received from these individuals was invaluable to the development of this product and helped to make it one that we're proud to have join The Missing Sync family." The Missing Sync for BlackBerry synchronizes information between Mac OS X 10.4's computer's Address Book and iCal applications and the corresponding applications on a BlackBerry. Built-in support for Apple's Sync Services technology means that information can also be synchronized with other Sync Services-savvy applications, including Microsoft Entourage 2004 and Chronos' SOHO Organizer. Memos sync with the included Mark/Space Notebook application, or alternatively with Microsoft Entourage or Bare Bones Software's Yojimbo. For BlackBerry Pearl and 8800 series users, the software interfaces directly with Apple's iPhoto and iTunes applications. So users can choose what iPhoto albums to have resized and downloaded to their devices. And pictures taken with the Pearl's camera are automatically imported into iPhoto or a folder on the Mac. With the iTunes plug-in, users can select playlists of unprotected music and podcasts and download them to the Pearl or 8800’s memory card. If the playlist changes, those changes are then reflected on the device. The user simply checks off the playlists they want downloaded to their microSD card. The Missing Sync copies them over automatically during the next sync. The Missing Sync for BlackBerry goes for $39.95 as a download. It should be available in several weeks for $49.95 on CD.
