T-Mobile BlackBerry 8800 Hits Web with a Thud

I saw the BlackBerry 8800 just after midnight yesterday on My T-Mobile under phone upgrades. It was exciting and I was thinking about buying the new device ... until I saw the price.

For current T-Mobile customers, the 8800 was listed for $469.99 with a 2-year extension and $549.99 without an extension. If you are brand new to T-Mobile or are willing to get another account, the cost of the 8800 drops to a more consumer-friendly $349.99—$300 after a $50 mail-in rebate.

I was dumbfounded.

Were my eyes decieving me? Could T-Mobile be so wrong to long standing customers? Apparently they can. The prices are listed there in black and white print.

What does this mean for BlackBerry lovers who use T-Mobile? My guess, we are all waiting for the 8300 version (with the addition of a 2-megapixel camera with LED flash, GPS and Wi-Fi) that is rumored to be coming out soon. Why spend $550 for this one, when all signs are pointing to a newer cooler model in a few months, or even just a few weeks?

One theory a friend tossed out was maybe T-Mobile wanted to milk the 8800 for all it is worth before the newer BlackBerry comes out. I'm hoping this is true, as it could mean there will be a new BlackBerry very soon.
