As we reported yesterday, Research In Motion (RIM) and Verizon Wireless just announced the first CDMA/GSM BlackBerry, allowing users to use their device for voice calls and data (i.e. e-mail) outside the U.S. The new BlackBerry 8830 is due to ship May 14th via Verizon's business sales channels, and should hit stores on May 28th. Verizon also introduced a new lobal BlackBerry service to support the 8830

Today, we scored a picture of the Sprint edition of that very same BlackBerry (see top image). Sprint told us its version of the 8830 won’t ship until sometime in July.

Here's some features of 8830:

  •  EV-DO/GPRS network, along with GSM/GPRS
  •  Auto-selection of CDMA/GSM Mode
  •  Trackball navigation system
  •  Media player
  •  Expandable memory
  •  Speaker phone
  •  Bluetooth
  •  Voice activated dialing
  •  Instant Messaging

Verizon will sell the new phone for $299.99 after a $100 rebate for a new two-year contract. As for Sprint, the carrier hasn't announced pricing yet, but is currently accepting pre-registrations on its Web site.

To go with the new globe trotting BlackBerry Verizon's new Global BlackBerry plan will deliver BlackBerry service in Australia, Europe, parts of Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and North America. With Global BlackBerry you can make and receive voice calls from more than 150 countries in these regions, and send and receive e-mail in more than 60 countries.

The Global BlackBerry plan comes with 24-hour support, a SIM card and a calling card to get support when outside the U.S. It'll go for $64.99 a month with a qualifying voice plan and $69.99 without a voice plan. Pay As You Go can be added to any voice plan for $20 per megabyte.

If you just want the BlackBerry 8830 on Verizon for e-mail in the U.S., unlimited e-mail plans start at $49.99 a month.
