Review: LexSpell - A 'Free' and Useful Spelling Program

By Melissa Oxendale

LexSpell v 2.0 is a spell checker made by Beiks. They are now offering LexSpell for free for personal use. If you like it, however, they ask you pay $10 to register it, at least for this public release.

Basically you get the full version, with no expiration, no third party ads, but regular reminders to register. The Web site does mention that future releases may only be available to registered users, as well as a statement that Beiks may change the distribution policy of LexSpell at any time, meaning one day it might not be free.

I think this idea is a great one, and will only happen again if enough people register the program. I know all of us love free programs, but I suggest if you like and use the program and want to see other applications released like this, register it.

LexSpell integrates right into your email. Once you type a message up you can select LexSpell from the menu and it will check the spelling and bring up a list of possible correct spellings, as well as allow you to add the word it flags as misspelled to the dictionary, just like on your PC.

I tested it with a document that included all sorts of misspellings. It caught them every time. Of course, like any spell check, it will not catch words you misspell that are other words, like us and use.

Once you select your correctly spelled word you will get taken to the register now menu if you haven't registered LexSpell. This happens for every word it flags as misspelled. If you have a lot of words flagged, this can get annoying, and is a great reason to pay the $10.00 to register the program and make it go away.

You can also open LexSpell on its own and enter text you want to have checked. This could be used for texting or sending IMs to someone you want to impress.

I would love to see LexSpeill integrated everywhere throughout a BlackBerry, not just the e-mail application, so I could spell check words right from my SMS and IM software or even a submission on the web.

Overall, LexSpell works great. As much as I e-mail, I also know I can't spell as well as i would like. It is well worth $10 to avoid a constant stream of annoying registration messages.
