Video Clues You In On iPhone’s Soft Keyboard

One of the most contentious features of the iPhone has been its touch-screen QWERTY thumb-keyboard. How well does it work? Is it as easy to use as BlackBerry, or even a Treo, hard keyboard?

The overall consensus from early reviews is that while the iPhone keyboard works well after a short getting-used-to period, it won't be supplanting a RIM-style keyboard as the text input king anytime soon. (Supposedly, the iPhone's keyboard - and its multitouch display in general - only responds to the touch of your skin. If true, that could make the iPhone a drag to use in the dead of winter.)

Apple has posted a second iPhone video, this one devoted to the keyboard, for those interested in learning more about this important feature ahead of tomorrow’s launch. The new video is instructive, covering the keyboard's features in more depth than the first iPhone video.

For example, we find out the iPhone's dictionary automatically learns the words you type most often, in addition to your address book, and the key layout of the keyboard is context sensitive. So it changes depending on the application you're in.

As with the general iPhone video, the keyboard one comes in small, medium, and large streaming versions as well as a downloadable edition.
