Latest Opera Mini Beta Released, Adds Some BlackBerry Specific Features

By Melissa Oxendale
August 31, 2007

Opera has just released the second beta of Opera Mini 4, the Norwegian company's free mobile browser for Java-capable mobile phones and smartphones. With the software, which first went into beta back in June, Opera promises to allow you to speedily view any Web site from your mobile handset.

For BlackBerry users, the new beta adds a few BlackBerry specific features, including support for the native BlackBerry menu and a new interface. It also allows you to accept the EULA (End-User License Agreement) with the BlackBerry menu.

Here's a laundry list of additional new features Opera is touting in beta 2:

  •  Added encryption
  •  Added multi search, with shortcut #+9
  •  Added create search from form field
  •  Added landscape mode, shortcut #+*
  •  Added support for small anti-aliased bitmap fonts
  •  Added content folding
  •  Simplified setup process
  •  Improved image quality
  •  Improved fit to width mode rendering
  •  Simplified settings page
  •  Fixed decoding of images that were skipped when partially above the window
  •  Added clock adjustment setting
  •  Changing the font size via settings now clears the document cache
  •  Now saves full screen mode between sessions
  •  Dialogs are now displayed with round corners and alpha channel overlay windows
  •  Delayed randomness gathering for secure connections until first real page request

As with the first Opera Mini 4 beta, the new one will automatically suggest a place to begin reading when you load a Web page. When it's time to dive into the page, it enables you to zoom in on the content you want. Also, Opera Mini dynamically changes the size of text and images, with the aim of reducing the amount of unnecessary scrolling, to therefore making it more convenient to read pages.

Opera Mini links to a proxy (or remote) server to pre-process and compress Web pages and content before sending it to your phone. The idea is this will greatly speed up the browsing experience on a cell phone or smartphone and, because you're receiving less data, reduce data-usage costs as well; particularly for those without all-you-can-eat data plans.

You can check out Opera Mini 4 here. Or you can go to mini.opera.com/beta directly from your BlackBerry to download the browser over the air.

Conveniently, the beta installs beside any current versions of Opera Mini you might have already installed. That way, if you run into trouble, you can always go back to the previous version.
