Remote PC Access Coming to Palm Foleo

Foleo, the laptop-like device Palm labels a Mobile Companion, has had no problem garnering support from third-party developers. You can now add LogMeIn and its remote PC access solutions to that rapidly growing list.

LogMeIn provides secure connections between remote PCs over the Web—enabling desktop remote control, data backup and file sharing. The idea is to give users the ability to quickly and securely access files and network resources on their home or work computers when away, according to the companies.

Adding these capabilities to Foleo greatly increases the usefulness of the otherwise limited device, which by design offers far fewer features than a Windows-run notebook computer.

There are two flavors of LogMeIn: One free that allows users to view desktops, files and network resources; and the other, LogMeIn Pro, which adds file transfer, remote printing, large-file sharing and guest-invite features for $12.95 per month or $69.95 per year.

LogMeIn prevents unauthorized access and secures data moving back and forth between Foleo and a PC with 128-to 256-bit SSL encryption.

"The Foleo is the perfect device for mobile professionals who want to travel lighter and carry only what they absolutely need,” said Palm senior VP Mark Bercow. "By adding LogMeIn to the Foleo, users can travel with the essentials, but still have access to files and documents left behind.”

At $499, the ultra-slim, 2.5-pound Foleo is targeted at those who don't require the full power of a laptop, but would still like a large screen (10 inch) and full keyboard when reading, editing and responding to e-mail, including attachments, and accessing the Web than is possible through a smartphone directly.

The Linux-run device automatically synchronizes files and data back and forth between itself and a smartphone over a wireless Bluetooth connection.

Presumably, you'll be able to use that smartphone or Foleo's built-in Wi-Fi as the a bridge to wirelessly access your desktop computer with LogMeIn.
