AvantGo, one of the first mobile Internet services, is now available for Symbian OS/S60 interface smartphones, Sybase 365, the company behind Avanrtgo, announced today.

Symbian is the world's leading mobile-device platform, with more than 165 million Symbian smartphones shipping around the world since the release of the Ericsson R380, the first device to run on the OS, way back in 2000. The lion's share of these devices have sported Nokia's S60 interface.

With the AvantGo client installed, Symbian/S60 (mostly Nokia) smartphone users can now access and sync the service's customized mobile content, including thousands of handheld-formatted Internet channels, RSS subscriptions, a Travel Guide, etc.

Although you can surf the Web wirelessly through the Avantgo, the main advantage of the service's client software is how it caches customized content locally, so you can access sites even when a wireless connection isn't present—say when your in a tunnel on the subway or on a plane.

And because AvantGo updates pages on a device automatically, the service always gives users access to the latest content available on the mobile channels they've subscribed to.
