Tip: Smartphone - Giving Your Photos Some Effects

By Amy Mayer

A little experimenting with the features of your smartphone's camera could pull up some gems. On the AT&T 8525, for example, the Effects option lets you shoot an image in grayscale, sepia, "cool" or negative modes.

Select Camera from the Start Menu.

Turn the device so you're viewing in landscape mode.

In the upper left corner, you'll see an icon surrounded on both sides by arrows. These arrows let you scroll through a variety of settings.

For example, if you scroll till you see an icon that looks like three squares on top of each other, then click on the icon on the lower left corner of the screen, you can set the ambience.

That means adjusting the white balance or choosing an Effect, such as grayscale (black and white), sepia (old-style brown and gold), cool (an icy blue shading) or negative (inverse darks and lights).

These shots of a fire truck illustrate sepia (top), cool (middle) and negative (bottom).

Other features tucked away in that upper-left set of icons include panoramic mode, templates for a magazine cover or clothes line, and video.

You can send the images via messaging from phone to phone or transfer them to your desktop.

Some camera phones and smartphones may not generally shoot with the high resolution you'd want for 4 x 6 prints, but these images are great for emailing and MMSing around or using on the web.
