RIM Buying Maker of Podcast Platform

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (RIM) has entered an all-cash agreement to purchase Chalk Media, a British Columbia-based developer of the Mobile Chalkboard application suite.

Mobile Chalkboard allows BlackBerry users to download targeted audio and video content automatically as pushcasts, the BlackBerry version of podcasts.

A special meeting of Chalk's shareholders will review the proposed merger next month. The two companies expect the transaction to close in February.

RIM will pay a price per share of CDN $0.142, or CDN $23,125,000.

According to Chalk Media, enterprises use Mobile chalkboard to wirelessly send sensitive or media-rich communications, provide always-available performance support, extend compliance programs, and build relationships with clients and business partners.
