Automatically Share Location on Facebook with FindMe

By James Alan Miller
March 18, 2008

FindMe is a new Facebook application and service from Electric Pocket that allows people to share their current locations through their Windows Mobile and BlackBerry smartphones. Since it is based on cell tower triangulation, no GPS is required.

With FindMe, you "tag" commonly visited locations (home, office, restaurants, etc.) and when you are at those locations your Facebook profile is updated. That is unless you choose to "Go Dark,” which means your location won’t be broadcast.

And because FindMe doesn't deliver geographic location information, only the names of locations that users have tagged will be shared on their FaceBook profiles. When users are in a non-tagged area, their Facebook profiles will show their location as "Unknown."

For those who may wish to organize impromptu get-togethers, FindMe allows them to add additional location information, such as a favorite place's postal code, enabling the application to offer a map or directions to their current location.

The first release of FindMe works with all GSM Windows Mobile smartphones and all CDMA and GSM BlackBerry devices with trackballs—in other words, the Pearl and Curve BlackBerry models.
