Platypus: "The squishiest Shoot-Em-Up Ever," Astraware

By James Alan Miller

Astraware just informed us it's released a mobile version of Idigicon's cult PC game Platypus. It is calling the title the "squishiest shoot-em-up ever." Why? Because the side-scrolling arcade game's graphics are entirely made out of modeling clay.

Here's the premise:

The vast continent-spanning city of Collosatropolis has finally reached the limits of its expansion, and tall buildings cover every available space. The Collosotropolan leaders have decided the simplest solution is to invade the neighboring country of Mungola. They don't anticipate much of a struggle - Mungolans are simple, earthy types without much love for industry. In fact, Mungola's entire defense force consists of a single squadron of fighter planes - the venerable F-27 'Platypus'.

The player-pilot flies the Platypus—across "squashy" fields and trees, avoiding mountain and shooting down enemy ships—o protect the planet.

Platypus is optimized for play for both 5-way or stylus gameplay on Palm OS and Windows Mobile smartphones and PDAs. It sells for $19.95.

Astraware says it is working on a Symbian S60 and UIQ version for release next quarter. It finally released its first title for the platform only last month.

Boardgames bundles eight games in one package. These include Chess, Backgammon, Ludo, Checkers, Reversi, Nine Men's Morris, Snakes and Ladders, and Tic Tac Toe&151;all with three levels of difficulty and support for multiple languages.
