Styletap Readying Beta of Palm OS Emulator for Symbian OS

By James Alan Miller
April 9, 2008

Today, Styletap enables Windows Mobile device users to successfully run many of the tens of thousands of applications written for the Palm platform over the years. And while it may eventually may or may not do so for iPhone, it will definitely do so for Symbian-run smartphones.

The company is now inviting those interested in taking part in the StyleTap CrossPlatform for Symbian OS beta program—due to launch in little over a month, on May 12th—to sign up by shooting them an e-mail, following a template and instructions posted here.

StyleTap will support Symbian OS smartphone that run on both the UIQ 3 and S60 3rd Edition platforms. Manufacturers who build Symbian-based handsets add a second interface layer-usually Nokia's S60 interface, but sometimes UIQ (owned by Sony Ericsson and Motorola)-to provide some of their smartphones functionality, look, and feel.

Although it hasn't made much of an impact in North American, the Symbian OS is by far the most popular smartphone platform worldwide.

77.3-million Symbian-run smartphones, 141 different models from eight licensees, shipped last year. This brings the total number to move since the release of the first Symbian device in 2000 to 188 million.
