Technological advances have been hard on the staid old newspaper. Sure, color printing made the pages more attractive, but the hard copy versions have to compete with any number of virtual alternatives. One solution the better-funded newsrooms can experiment with is offering content in the myriad ways people now consume information. To wit: you can text
The New York Times and get headlines with links to stories.
In the Week In Review section of the Sunday paper, a little note on the section cover says "For the latest articles from Week In Review on your mobile phone, text "week" to 698698." When you do that, you get back, almost instantly, three headlines which, when you open the text message, offer links you can click on if your phone is Internet capable.
You can also reply to get more headlines if you don't find something of interest. Now, spreading your Sunday newspaper consumption out over the week is a little easier and more convenient—even if you recycle the paper before you're done reading it.
