Sure, cell phone calls are a no no when you're on an airplane or in a movie theater. And they certainly can be distracting while driving, especially when you're not using a hands-free option—either through a headset or, better yet, over Bluetooth through your car's speaker system. But did you know your cell phone or smartphone can be hazardous to your hairstyle as well?

Early this morning, I stopped by the barbershop with my youngest daughter after dropping my oldest child off at school. I noticed a sign (see picture - yes, taken with a smartphone) warning me that "Cell phone Use Could Be Harmful to Your Haircut!" while sitting in the barber chair.

I asked about the sign and was told it was a polite way of asking customers not to use their cell phone when they're getting their hair cut.

Turns out it is fairly common to have people receive and (even) make calls while sitting in the barber's chair, sometimes switching their handset from ear to ear, depending on which side the stylist is working on at the time. That's pretty distracting.

I don't know about you, but I need all the help I can get from my barber to look halfway decent. The last thing I'd want to do is distract them from their work.

Also, couldn't moving your head around a lot while getting your hair cut lead to an accident? I don't mean the type of accident where blood is involved. But, rather one that could end with a wanted clump or swath of hair becoming separated from your scalp and landing forlornly on the floor.

Not necessarily because of the haircutter becoming distracted, although that is possible, but because of the sudden movement of your head to see who's calling or to pick up the phone. Thankfully, I was assured such an incident hasn't occurred at my barbershop - at least not yet, anyway.

Like in the movie theater, cell phone-use in the barber's chair is not only distracting and q nuisance but inconsiderate - to the barber and to other customers - as well Yes, it is a service industry, but that doesn't mean they don't have a schedule to maintain and other customer's needs to meet.

One stylist told me she even received the hold-on-a-second-and-leave-me-alone finger after explaining this to a customer who ignored repeated requests to put down the cell phone.

So do yourself and everyone else a favor the next time you get a haircut. Keep the cell phone chatter down to a minimum. Chances are you'll not only look better, but feel better afterwards as well. And you might was well stay on good terms with and not do anything to distract the person with scissors or a clipper to your head every few weeks, right?
